๐Ÿœ MYSTERY TO SOLVE

How far does an ant walk to go all the way around your garden?

Imagine an ant standing at the corner of a rectangular garden. It walks along every edge until it's back where it started. The total distance it walks has a special name in maths: the perimeter.

By the end of today, you'll be able to work out that distance for almost any flat shape โ€” even tricky ones made by joining shapes together!

๐Ÿ‘€ Watch the ant walk the edge

8 cm 5 cm
Distance walked: 0 cm

Press start and watch the ant trace every edge of the garden. When it's back at the start, that total distance is the perimeter.

๐Ÿค” PREDICT

Before pressing start โ€” roughly how far do you think the ant will walk in total, if the garden is 8 cm long and 5 cm wide?

13 cm
40 cm

๐ŸŽฏ LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to...

  • 1Explain what perimeter means and how to measure it.
  • 2Use formulas to find the perimeter of rectangles, squares, triangles, regular polygons and parallelograms.
  • 3Find the perimeter of irregular (composite) shapes made from two or more plane shapes.
  • 4Work backwards to find a missing side length when the perimeter is already known.
SupportFocus on adding up labelled sides of rectangles and triangles.
CoreApply the correct formula confidently for each shape, including polygons.
ChallengeSolve composite shapes and missing-side problems using algebraic reasoning.
๐ŸŒ This lesson blends the Nigerian, British and American curricula โ€” perimeter is taught as a core geometry/measurement skill in all three, usually using centimetres and metres.
๐Ÿง  WHAT DO YOU ALREADY KNOW?

Starter: which distance is longer?

Drag each real-life situation into the box where it belongs โ€” is it about the edge/outline of something, or the flat surface? This helps us see what you already know about "going around" a shape.

EDGE / OUTLINE (perimeter)
FLAT SURFACE (area)

๐Ÿ–ฑ๏ธ Drag a card onto the correct box (or tap a card, then tap the box, on touch devices).

๐Ÿ’ก Don't worry if "area" is new to you โ€” we're only focusing on perimeter (the edge) in this lesson. This is just to help you notice the difference!
๐Ÿ“ THE BIG IDEA

What is perimeter?

Perimeter is the total distance all the way around the outside edge of a flat (2D) shape. It's measured in units of length, like cm, m, inches or feet โ€” never in "squared" units.

PERIMETER๐Ÿ” Click to reveal

The total distance around the outside edge of a 2D shape. You find it by adding up the lengths of every side.

Example: A football pitch's perimeter is the total length of the white line running all the way around it.
Perimeter = the sum of all the side lengths

Where you'll see this in real life

๐Ÿงฑ

โšก QUICK CHECK

A shape has 4 sides measuring 3 cm, 5 cm, 3 cm and 5 cm. What is its perimeter?

8 cm
16 cm
15 cm
โ–ญ RECTANGLES & SQUARES

Perimeter of rectangles and squares

A rectangle has 2 pairs of equal, opposite sides โ€” a length and a width. A square is a special rectangle where all 4 sides are equal.

Rectangle: P = 2 ร— (length + width)   |   Square: P = 4 ร— side

๐ŸŽฎ Drag the sliders and watch the shape change

8 cm 5 cm
P = 2 ร— (8 + 5) = 26 cm
๐Ÿงฎ Worked Example: A rectangle is 9 cm long and 4 cm wide. Find its perimeter.
Step 1: Write the formula: P = 2 ร— (length + width)
Step 2: Add length and width: 9 + 4 = 13
Step 3: Multiply by 2: 2 ร— 13 = 26
Answer: Perimeter = 26 cm
๐ŸŽฏ YOUR TURN

A square field has a side length of 12 m. What is its perimeter?

24 m
36 m
48 m
๐Ÿ”บ TRIANGLES

Perimeter of triangles

A triangle has 3 sides. There's no shortcut formula with multiplying for a general triangle โ€” you simply add all 3 sides together. For a special equilateral triangle (all sides equal), you can multiply one side by 3.

P = side a + side b + side c   |   Equilateral: P = 3 ร— side

๐ŸŽฎ Watch the ant walk a right-angled triangle

6 cm 8 cm 10 cm
Distance walked: 0 cm

This right-angled triangle has sides 6 cm, 8 cm and 10 cm. Watch the total build up as the ant walks each side.

Equilateral

All 3 sides equal

Isosceles

2 sides equal

Scalene

No sides equal

๐ŸŽฏ YOUR TURN

An equilateral triangle has a side of 7 cm. What is its perimeter?

14 cm
21 cm
49 cm
โฌก REGULAR POLYGONS

Perimeter of regular polygons

A regular polygon is a shape where every side is the exact same length (like a regular pentagon or hexagon). Instead of adding the same number again and again, we can multiply!

P = number of sides (n) ร— side length

๐ŸŽฎ Build your own regular polygon

P = 6 ร— 4 = 24 cm
๐Ÿงฎ Worked Example: A regular pentagon (5 sides) has each side 6 cm long. Find its perimeter.
Step 1: Write the formula: P = n ร— side
Step 2: A pentagon has n = 5 sides.
Step 3: Multiply: 5 ร— 6 = 30
Answer: Perimeter = 30 cm
๐ŸŽฏ YOUR TURN

A regular octagon (8 sides) has each side 3.5 cm. What is its perimeter?

11.5 cm
28 cm
24.5 cm
โ–ฑ PARALLELOGRAMS

Perimeter of parallelograms

A parallelogram has 2 pairs of equal, opposite sides โ€” just like a rectangle โ€” but it's "pushed over" at a slant. This means the same formula idea works, even though the shape looks tilted.

P = 2 ร— (side a + side b)
9 cm 5 cm
๐Ÿงฎ Worked Example: A parallelogram has sides of 9 cm and 5 cm. Find its perimeter.
Step 1: Write the formula: P = 2 ร— (a + b)
Step 2: Add the two different sides: 9 + 5 = 14
Step 3: Multiply by 2: 2 ร— 14 = 28
Answer: Perimeter = 28 cm
๐Ÿ’ก Remember: the slanted side of a parallelogram is still a straight side with its own length โ€” don't confuse it with the shape's height (the straight-up distance between the two parallel sides), which is used for area instead.
๐ŸŽฏ YOUR TURN

A parallelogram has sides of 11 cm and 6 cm. What is its perimeter?

17 cm
34 cm
66 cm
๐Ÿงฉ IRREGULAR / COMPOSITE SHAPES

Perimeter of shapes made from two or more shapes

Some shapes are made by joining two or more plane shapes together โ€” like an L-shape made from two rectangles. Sometimes not every side length is given, so you must work out the missing sides first, then add everything on the outside edge.

10 cm ? 4 cm ? 6 cm 8 cm
๐Ÿงฎ Worked Example: Find the perimeter of the L-shape above.
Step 1: Known sides: bottom = 10 cm, left = 8 cm, top-left = 6 cm, small notch side = 4 cm.
Step 2: Find the missing top-right side: 10 โˆ’ 6 = 4 cm.
Step 3: Find the missing right side: 8 โˆ’ 4 = 4 cm.
Step 4: Add all 6 outer sides: 10 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 6 + 8 = 36
Answer: Perimeter = 36 cm
๐Ÿ’ก Golden rule for composite shapes: walk all the way around the outside only. Never count an inside "join line" that isn't on the outer edge.
๐Ÿค” CHECK YOUR THINKING

Why can't you find the perimeter of the L-shape by just adding the 4 given numbers (10, 8, 6, 4)?

Because L-shapes don't have a perimeter
Because the shape has 6 outer sides in total, and 2 of them aren't labelled yet
Because you should multiply the 4 numbers instead
๐Ÿ”Ž WORKING BACKWARDS

Finding a missing side when you know the perimeter

Sometimes you're given the perimeter and asked to find a missing side instead! The trick is to rearrange the formula, step by step โ€” just like solving a puzzle.

๐Ÿงฎ Worked Example: A rectangle has a perimeter of 30 cm. Its length is 9 cm. Find its width.
Step 1: Start with the formula: P = 2 ร— (l + w), so 30 = 2 ร— (9 + w)
Step 2: Divide both sides by 2: 15 = 9 + w
Step 3: Subtract 9 from both sides: w = 15 โˆ’ 9 = 6
Answer: The width is 6 cm. Check: 2 ร— (9 + 6) = 30 โœ”
๐Ÿงฎ Worked Example: A regular pentagon has a perimeter of 45 cm. Find the length of one side.
Step 1: Start with the formula: P = n ร— side, so 45 = 5 ร— side
Step 2: Divide both sides by 5: side = 45 รท 5
Answer: Each side is 9 cm.
๐ŸŽฏ YOUR TURN

An equilateral triangle has a perimeter of 33 cm. What is the length of one side?

3 cm
11 cm
99 cm

โœ… LESSON RECAP

5 things you should remember

1Perimeter is the total distance all the way around the outside edge of a 2D shape, measured in length units like cm or m.
2For a rectangle, P = 2 ร— (length + width); for a square, P = 4 ร— side.
3For a triangle, add all 3 sides; for a regular polygon, multiply the number of sides by the side length (P = n ร— side).
4For composite (joined) shapes, first work out any missing side lengths, then add up every side on the outer edge only.
5If you know the perimeter but not a side, rearrange the formula step by step to work backwards and find the missing side.
๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ CAN YOU EXPLAIN THIS TO SOMEONE ELSE?

Try explaining to a family member: how would you find the perimeter of your own bedroom floor? Use the words perimeter, length, width, and add in your answer.
